SEO gets your pages ranked, AEO gets your content chosen as the direct answer, and GEO gets your brand cited inside AI-generated responses from tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Mode. To get cited by LLMs, rank well, answer questions directly, back claims with evidence, and keep your brand facts consistent across the web.

If you’re weighing SEO vs AEO vs GEO as three separate services, here’s the short version: they’re layers of one job. Skip the bottom layer and the top two don’t work.

SEO, AEO, and GEO in one sentence each

SEO vs AEO vs GEO
  • SEO (search engine optimization): making your pages easy to find, crawl, understand, and rank in search engines.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization): shaping your content so search and AI tools can pull it as the direct answer to a question. The term predates ChatGPT; it originated with featured snippets and voice assistants.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization): improving how often AI tools that generate answers, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Mode, use and cite your content and mention your brand. The term comes from a 2023 Princeton and IIT Delhi paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, published at KDD 2024.

Why the definitions don’t agree

Read five articles on this topic, and you’ll get five definitions. Some say AEO means being named as the answer and GEO means having your paragraph quoted. Others say AEO covers AI answers and GEO covers how AI describes your brand everywhere. One popular version limits GEO to Google’s AI Overviews.

Google takes a simpler line. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI features says that, from Google Search’s view, optimizing for AI search is still SEO, and it suggests checking any third-party AEO or GEO advice against its official guidance.

Our practical take: don’t argue about labels. Treat SEO, AEO and GEO as three questions about the same content. Can it be found? Can it be lifted as an answer? Will an AI trust it enough to cite it and name you?

Why you can’t skip SEO

It’s tempting to jump straight to “AI optimization”. That usually wastes money, because most AI answers are built on search.

Google says its AI features use retrieval-augmented generation: they pull pages through Google’s core Search ranking systems, and a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear at all. ChatGPT search works from OpenAI’s own crawler; per OpenAI’s crawler documentation, sites that block OAI-SearchBot won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

So SEO decides whether you’re in the pool. AEO and GEO decide whether you’re picked from it. For the mechanics of that picking, see our explainer on how LLMs decide what to answer.

How to get your brand cited by LLMs: 7 steps

brand cited by LLMs: 7 steps

These steps run from foundation to finish. Each one is sourced or tested, not guessed.

  1. Be findable by search and AI crawlers (SEO). Fix indexing, speed, and broken pages. In robots.txt, allow the search crawlers, including OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT. You can still block training bots such as GPTBot separately.
  2. Answer first under question-style headings (AEO). Put a one- or two-sentence answer directly under each heading, then the detail. That’s the passage a model can lift without rewriting.
  3. Back claims with evidence (GEO). In the GEO study, adding quotations, statistics, and citations from credible sources increased a page’s visibility in AI answers by 30–40% on its primary metric. Keyword stuffing gave little to no improvement and did worse than doing nothing on Perplexity. A more confident tone on its own made no significant difference.
  4. Make your brand facts identical everywhere. Your services, locations, hours, founders, and descriptions should match across your site, Google Business Profile, directories, social profiles, and Organization schema. If sources disagree, an AI has no safe version to repeat. Start with your Google Business Profile.
  5. Earn real third-party mentions. AI answers lean on sources other than you. In Pew Research Center’s analysis of 68,879 Google searches, Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit were the most-cited sources in AI summaries. Reviews, trade press, helpful videos, and genuine forum answers all count. Google warns that chasing inauthentic mentions doesn’t help, so skip paid placement schemes. Our link building team focuses on mentions in places your buyers actually read.
  6. Publish something only you can say. Google’s guide says unique, non-commodity content will likely matter more than any other tactic for AI visibility. First-hand data, real project results, and expert opinions with a name attached are hard for an AI to find anywhere else. This is also the core of E-E-A-T trust signals.
  7. Measure the right numbers. Use Search Console’s Generative AI report for AI Overview and AI Mode impressions, Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report for Copilot citations, and GA4’s AI Assistant channel for visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Add a monthly check of 20 to 30 buyer questions in the main AI tools to see who gets named.

One encouraging result for smaller brands: in the GEO study, lower-ranked pages gained the most from the step 3 changes, while the top-ranked page often lost visibility. You don’t need to be the biggest site to be the most quotable.

Where to spend first

If you are…Spend first onThen
A new or small site with little trafficSEO basics: indexing, service pages, Business ProfileAnswer-first rewrites of your top 5 pages
Ranking on page one but rarely cited by AIAEO and GEO: answer blocks, sourced stats, expert quotesThird-party mentions and reviews
Well-known but described wrongly by AIBrand fact consistency across every listingFresh, first-hand content that corrects the record
A local service businessGoogle Business Profile, reviews, location pagesAnswer-first FAQs on each service page

Choose a GEO-first project only if your SEO foundations are already solid. Otherwise, you’re polishing pages that AI tools can’t find.

What not to spend money on

  • llms.txt for Google. Google says its Search and AI features ignore llms.txt and similar AI files. Adding one for other tools is fine; just don’t expect Google gains.
  • Rewriting everything “for AI”. Google says you don’t need a special writing style or tiny content chunks for its AI features.
  • Hundreds of near-duplicate question pages. Google warns that content made at scale mainly to manipulate rankings or AI answers can breach its scaled content abuse policy.
  • Anyone promising guaranteed AI citations. No one controls which sources an AI picks, and answers change between runs.
